REELS BIG, BIGGER, BIGGEST!

A specialist lashing & securing task

PROJECT | 20 JULY 2021

What was the challenge?

Reels are loaded in different ways. Sometimes in a closed container. Sometimes on a flat-rack. Or, as in this case, they were so big and heavy that they had to be secured on deck.
“The weight and size of the reel? What is the ship like? What about the deck loading capacity? We take all these things into account in our calculations. You are constantly looking for the measured approach,” says Tim van Essen of Maple Group.

Solution

It’s all about good communication between all the parties involved. From the customer and stevedore to the surveyors and captain. How do you access the right information? For example, about the number of chains and the type of timber required. Are 30×30, 20×20 or 15×15 beams needed? And how long do they need to be? In order for the 6 meter beams to arrive at the quay at the desired length of 2 meters.

Result

“The Maple Group aims to finish the lashing work between one and one and a half hours after loading,” notes Tim. “So that the surveyor and captain are satisfied with the end result, the work can be signed off, and the ship leaves nicely on time.”
